The One-Miss Rule

Habits take much longer to form than the “21 days” myth suggests — and missing one day barely matters. What kills a habit is the dramatic restart afterwards.

By Tareef Jafferi · 20 Aug 2026

Participants repeating a daily behaviour took a median of 66 days to reach automaticity, with a huge range from 18 to 254 days. A single missed day had almost no lasting effect.

The danger is the story people tell after a miss: “we broke it”, followed by a fresh relaunch. Each relaunch signals that the practice is optional. Quietly carrying on is what turns a ritual into a habit.
