Graceful Farewell

When someone leaves, the team gathers to share what they'll take forward from that person — closing the chapter with dignity.

Why it matters

How an organisation treats people who leave tells those who stay what it really values. Good endings strengthen trust and alumni relationships.

How to run it

  1. Ask the leaver how they'd like to be farewelled.
  2. Invite each colleague to share one thing they'll carry forward from working with them.
  3. Let the leaver respond with what they'll take with them.
  4. Close with an open door — how to stay in touch as part of the alumni community.

Watch out for

  • Skipping it for people who left on difficult terms — adapt the format, don't drop it
  • Making it all about the manager's speech

When not to use it

Involuntary exits where the person prefers no gathering — always ask first.

The Offer

During onboarding, offer new hires a payment to leave if the culture isn’t right for them — so everyone who stays has chosen to.
