InDay

Give one day a month back to employees to invest in themselves, their teams or their community — around a shared theme.

Why it matters

LinkedIn introduced InDay in 2010: a monthly day for employees to focus on growth, wellbeing and giving back, each month with a theme such as learning, wellness or community. It signals that the company invests in people beyond their job description.

How to run it

  1. Set the theme for the month — learning, wellness, community, reflection, play.
  2. Offer options: workshops, volunteering, self-directed learning, team activities.
  3. Protect the day. No meetings, no expectation of email.
  4. Share stories afterwards so the impact is visible.

Watch out for

  • Managers quietly expecting normal work to continue

When not to use it

Start with a quarterly version if a monthly day isn’t feasible.

The Zeigarnik Effect

Unfinished tasks keep tugging at your attention — but you don’t have to finish them to make the tug stop. Writing a specific plan does almost as much.

Let Them Meet the Person They Helped

Five minutes with a real beneficiary can transform motivation for weeks. Reading about the same person does almost nothing.
