No-Meeting Day

Protect one day a week from internal meetings so everyone gets uninterrupted time for deep work.

Why it matters

Companies such as Asana and Shopify protect a weekly meeting-free day. A shared rule works far better than individuals trying to defend their own calendars.

How to run it

  1. Pick the day organisation-wide (Wednesday is a popular choice).
  2. Block it in every calendar.
  3. Agree on exceptions — customer meetings and emergencies only.
  4. Review after a quarter. Ask people what they did with the time.

Watch out for

  • Senior people booking “quick syncs” anyway
  • Meetings simply moving to other days and overloading them

The Zeigarnik Effect

Unfinished tasks keep tugging at your attention — but you don’t have to finish them to make the tug stop. Writing a specific plan does almost as much.
