Open Q&A All-Hands

A regular all-hands where leaders take unscreened questions from anyone — including the uncomfortable ones.

Why it matters

Google’s founders made a weekly TGIF all-hands with open Q&A a hallmark of the company’s early culture. Direct, public access to leaders builds trust and keeps them accountable — as long as the answers are honest.

How to run it

  1. Collect questions before and during, with upvoting.
  2. Answer the top-voted questions first, especially uncomfortable ones.
  3. Follow up on anything you couldn’t answer, publicly.
  4. Track anonymity over time. As trust grows, more people should be willing to put their name to questions.

Watch out for

  • Screening out hard questions
  • Spin instead of answers — people notice instantly

The “CC everyone” epidemic

Copying the boss “just in case” looks like transparency. It’s really a symptom of fear — and leaders can cure it one reply at a time.
