The Resources Question

In team meetings and one-to-ones, ask: “Does the team have what it needs to achieve its priorities?” — then act on the answer.

Why it matters

Adequate resources were one of the three strongest predictors of wellbeing in a study of more than 2,600 employees — alongside recognition and manager quality. Asking regularly, and acting, is one of the simplest ways a manager can protect wellbeing.

How to run it

  1. Ask: "Does the team have what it needs to achieve its priorities?"
  2. Probe gently: time, tools, information, access, decision rights, clarity of priorities.
  3. Sort the answers: what you can fix this week, what needs escalating, what needs a trade-off.
  4. Act on one thing and tell the team what you did.
  5. Ask again next time — and check whether the last fix helped.

Watch out for

  • Asking and never acting — it teaches people not to answer
  • Only hearing about tools; also ask about time, clarity and access
